The thirst for the word of God, the longing to fellowship with JIL brethrens, and the leading of the Holy Spirit moved the hearts of a then U.S. Army soldier (Rick Wood) and his wife (Tess) together with a hotel employee (Gliceria “Bhing” Pangayan ) to start a bible study. This seemingly simple event saw the birth of JIL Church Honolulu, thus fulfilling in the Hawaiian Islands the mission of JIL Church Worldwide through the prophetic mission and vision of its founder and spiritual director, Bishop Bro. Eddie C. Villanueva.
The first bible study opened in December 15, 1995. It branched out into prayer meetings and fellowships and moved from house to house. The group slowly grew in number and yearned to have a Sunday service. God answered the prayers with the first Sunday service at the Wood’s residence on March of 1996. Starting with the Aliamanu Cell Group in January 1997, more families joined the church and more cell groups were established.

The constant growth of the church was not free from trials and challenges in its early stage. Due to the growth in membership, the church sub-leased the multi-purpose room of a recreation center but after a while it was no longer permitted to use the facility when the lessor learned that it was a Christian church. The next two months, the church hopped from one hotel to another, met in banquet rooms or conference rooms or in any room that was available until God opened the doors for the church to lease the Foster Village Community Center. After six months, the congregation outgrew the facility and went back to scouting for a bigger place and found one at the Kalihi Valley area. The church moved on November 1997 and totally renovated the place in May 1998, which was then a warehouse.
The members of JIL Honolulu were predominantly military personnel and their families residing in the island for a temporary assignment. But still, what was noticeable, God sends more people as replacement when one leaves. Currently, the ministry has 100 members and is continuously growing. Many people have joined and been an intricate part of this work of God. Every ministry in the church is continually flourishing with God.

Ptra.Vhee Cabanting, a former pastor in Hong Kong, Binangonan Rizal, Philippines and Long Beach was assigned by the JIL USA leadership as the full-time pastor replacing Ptr.Rick who relocated to Texas. She accepted the challenge for the continuous growth of the ministry in membership and in other spiritual aspects.
Some of the ministry activities were the Gift giving at A’ala Park and the Hallelujah Night event. During the gift giving, the immediate needs of the homeless were provided while the Hallelujah Night is the alternative activity for Halloween. These are to equip the members for greater callings and responsibilities.
Presently, JIL Honolulu is planning for another event which is the Renewal of Marriage Vows with the tentative date on February 10, 2008. The congregation were also preparing for the upcoming 12th Anniversary of JIL Hawaii on June 29, 2008 at the PhilCom Center as the target venue.
