Quezon City is the largest of Metro Manila’s cities in population and land area. Over 2.39 million people live in this city, and about one-third or 32% of our population are less than 15 years old. Of all the cities in the Philippine metropolitan area, Quezon City has the largest potential for development, given its huge tracts of land still open for urban transformation and its strategic location as an intermodal transport point from north to south of the metropolis. Major transport roads traverse through the city, thus making the flow of people and commerce very easy. It is composed of 4 Congressional Districts and Cubao belongs to the 3rd District.
JIL Cubao started from a small bible study in Barangay Murphy 22 years ago. It was composed of several members attending the Araullo Sunday Service. They had a burden of reaching out the lost souls in this area. Thus, the first gathering was conceived. Several bible studies came out of this home church within the next few years until in the year 1989, the need for a Sunday Worship Service was realized. The first Sunday Service was held at the residence of Ptr. Robert Montemayor, who was the home church pastor then, at 15th Avenue, Cubao, Quezon City. The worship service immediately grew in number until the place could no longer accommodate them. They immediately looked for a bigger venue and found Alta Theatre viable. They had the service in the morning while the theatre continued its operations in the afternoon. Since the theatre was showing indecent films, there was an immediate struggle in the spirit, thus problems started to happen. It was concluded by the leadership to move to a new location and found a disco house available during that time. Since it only operates at night, the church had the whole morning and early afternoon at their disposal. The church adapted the DBS (Divided Bible Seminars) as part of the service and discipleship and leadership training programs were held as well. This resulted into an immediate growth of the congregation and by the end of their first year at the location, they held 2 morning worship services.
The capacity of the venue could no longer hold the rising number of attendees. Moreover, the early morning service could not start on time because the place needs to be cleaned from the previous night operations. Since it was located at the second floor, the maintenance people had a hard time moving the equipments up and down the stairs every Sunday. They now thought that it was time transfer to a more convenient site where they will not move the equipments anymore and they could have as many services and trainings as they could. This is when the place in Albany street became available.
The move to Albany street, Cubao proved to be very timely because the place was very convenient for the attendees. It was very near the corner of the major transport thoroughfare, Aurora Blvd.. Though there were some improvements needed to be done to make the place suitable for a church, the leaders and members were so enthusiastic in helping out for its renovation. But after 5 years, the owner of the place decided not to rent out the place anymore. They did not renew the contract at the dismay of the members. The leadership encouraged them not to worry because everybody believes the Lord will provide a better place for them. And truly enough, they found a place in Oxford street that was open for them to use for worship. Although major improvements were needed, the owner was even very happy that his vacant lot was to be used for a church service. The contract was drafted and JIL Cubao immediately relocated to their new house of worship. The first thing to be done was the construction of the roof and the floor. A major fund raising drive was started and the moment funds were available, construction immediately began. The main sanctuary was up in no time and ready for the 9th Anniversary celebration of JIL Cubao last May, 1997. In the following year, the adjacent lot which was owned by the same person was leased out to the church paving the way for an office and a school set up. On their 10th anniversary, Bro. Eddie Villanueva was their guest speaker and led the dedication of the church and school. From then on, JIL Cubao has been in that same place for the past 8 years.
JIL Cubao has grown significantly from its humble roots as a Bible study group at Murphy and its first worship service at 15th Avenue. Today, it has 2 Sunday Worship Services in Oxford st., and a satellite church at Windmill Park, Balara, Q.C. It has more than 70 cell groups all over District 3, Quezon City. Its present pastor is Ptr. George S. Cayanan, who also serves as the Area 10 Pastor (Cubao, Tatalon, Munoz) of the JIL Central Churches.
